baz vs. BBC
Survivors of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy and their families have recently become some of the most sought-after residents of the city. The horrors of the disaster are not forgotten, but there is a new distraction. Many of the survivors are now flush with compensation money and have been taking part in an unprecedented shopping binge here. Tempting them with discounts and offers are shops, banks and finance companies. At stake is $348m of compensation money which started to be handed out last month to individuals whose compensation claims have been accepted. Nearly 570,000 victims of the disaster are in line to receive this second instalment of compensation that originates in a 1989 settlement agreed by the factory owners, Union Carbide. Depending on the number of affected members, every claimant family is getting anything between $2,200 and $6,600.
1. Fuck Union Carbide! 2.
